About this Project

This project aims to unravel how synovial macrophages and fibroblasts coordinate the resolution of inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. The doctoral candidate will investigate the cellular and molecular pathways that fail during chronic inflammation using patient-derived samples, advanced single-cell and spatial transcriptomic technologies, and experimental models. The project combines immunology, systems biology and translational rheumatology to identify novel pro-resolving mechanisms and therapeutic targets. The candidate will work within the international HARPNET consortium and collaborate closely with leading academic and industrial partners in inflammation research.

Your profile and what you'll gain

Skills required

  • MSc in Life Science/Biology, or equivalent
  • Fluent in English and/or German
  • Good general understanding of immunology
  • Experienced with basic lab techniques including cell culture, flow cytometry, Western blot, ELISAs
  • A FELASA(-equivalent) certificate and/or a willingness to work with animal models
  • Experience with advanced methods including scSEQ or spatial sequencing and knowledge of how to analyses such data in R or Python will be an advantage but not essential

Skills acquired

  • You will be part of a dynamic and well-equipped research lab at the forefront of basic and translation immunology research
  • You will get extensive hands-on experience with advanced technologies, including spectral flow cytometry, various sequencing-based methods (bulk-RNA, single-cell analysis, spatial sequencing, etc), metabolomics and proteomics. Moreover, you will have access to a range of experimental models
  • You will learn how to analyse, integrate, disseminate and publish high-quality data sets

Eligibility Criteria

Before applying, candidates should ensure they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • have a MSc degree in Life Sciences or obtain a MSc degree by October 2026
  • have completed a research internship with relevant expertise
  • have obtained high grades during his/her studies
  • be fluent in English (some countries may also require language certifications – this will be communicated to applicants following shortlisting)
  • applicant must not have resided in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months preceding the recruitment date
